Something's Gotta Give, and it's this viewer's patience. Prompted by A.O. Scott's glowing (NYT) review, I went to see this for Keaton's performance. Which is certainly worth watching; as is Frances McDormand's supporting turn as Keaton's sister. It's a pleasure when either - or both - of these two actresses appear onscreen.
Unfortunately, they have to work with Nancy Meyer's thin and improbable, sitcom-level script. It may be unfair to expect
too much plausibility from a romantic comedy; but I had hoped for characters that would make me laugh in recognition; or were at least written with some charm and wit. Alas, what I got was unfunny clichés, and simplistic, predictable plotting. Plus - a big negative - the "eewww" factor in Jack Nicholson's Harry Sanborn: smirking, obnoxious, egotistical, and deeply unsexy. Never mind the age difference, I can't understand why a woman of
any age would fall for this character.
