Guardian Unlimited: The World's 40 Best Directors
It looks like
Guardian Unlimited assembled a panel of seven film critics (Peter Bradshaw, Xan Brooks, Molly Haskell, Derek Malcolm, Andrew Pulver, B Ruby Rich, and Steve Rose), who set about to create
a list of the top 40 directors working in film today. Though I can't seem to find any reasoning process behind the selections, the panel of critics ranked each director in five vaguely defined categories: Substance, Look, Craft, Originality, and Intelligence. Apparently, a director could gain up to 20 points in each category, in theory being able to score 100 total points. It's an "interesting" list to say the least; actually, though it contains many directors that would grace my own personal list, I think the
Guardian Unlimited list pretty much sucks, with too many notable omissions (an example, of the Taiwanese directors, Tsai Ming-liang and Ang Lee make the list, but the superior Hou Hsiao-hsien and Edward Yang are omitted; I love Tsai Ming-liang, and I think Lee is a very good director, but not top 40 list director), misranked directors (I like Soderbergh, but top 5?; and Kitano should rank higher than 30), and directors I'm not even close to be sold on as major talents (Alexander Payne, David O. Russell). Here is the top 5 in descending order:
5. Terrence Malick (85 points)
4. Steven Soderbergh (85 points)
3. Joel and Ethan Coen (86 points)
2. Martin Scorsese (88 points)
1. David Lynch (89 points)
