Drumline is a somewhat conventional but quite rousing feel-good movie about a know-it-all braggart drummer who gets a scholarship to an African-American college where he quickly becomes a marching band star and has to learn how to be a team player. Sounds pretty cliched, and sometimes is, but the marching band scenes are exciting and the acting by the lead, Nick Cannon, and Orlando Jones as his teacher is excellent. Cannon is not afraid to play the unlikeable side of his character honestly, so we feel there's a real triumph when the kid ultimately wises up as we know he will. And Jones, previously known for comedy only, is a solid and convincing dramatic actor. It's worth at least a DVD rental, and if you're in a feel-good mood, a trip to the multiplex. The movie is kind of a hit, and I can see why
