The Continuing Discussion of Chicago and Musicals

Admin Note: This post originally appeared under the comments section of a post that has already been archived, it can be read here. This was reposted so that these comments would be read on the main board, for purposes of continuing the discussion.

Shroomy is right; I haven't checked this thread recently, and there was not much need to. All the criticism has come from one person. The movie Chicago needs no particular protection from me. The criticisms are all pretty much what one might expect from someone who 1) doesn't much care for musicals.; and 2) pretty much loved Moulin Rouge by comparison. Now you can count me as someone who actually LIKED Moulin Rouge a lot, and yet thinks Chicago is approximately ten times better. The songs all sound alike? I can't counter this with a deconstruction/comparison of "I Can't Do It Alone" and "Nowadays." I can just say that it's not true. They all sound like period songs? True, and more power to them for transcending their pastiche qualities. Zellweger is shrill? Latifah overrated? What-e-ver. The movie has muscle, musicality, and pace. The acting is honest yet stylized. The direction heralds a bold new talent. The whole package may lead to a rebirth of the movie musical, one of the bravest and most entertaining forms ever to exist. I say bravo to the whole deal.
