www.movielens.org:
An interesting site, discovered through
Peter Howell’s column in The Star.
To quote Howell:
>The IMDb and the All Movie Guide (http://www.allmovie.com) both make movie recommendations. But the most sophisticated device has to be MovieLens (http://www.movielens.org), a site run by the GroupLens Research group at the University of Minnesota.
>The site employs "collaborative filtering" to present people with movie picks based on their likes and dislikes. MovieLens users are asked to rate a variety of movies on a scale of one to five and the information is crunched to narrow down choices. The site recently added a group option to match up people of similar tastes among its 50,000 regular users.
>The more movies you rate, the more MovieLens gets to know about you — and the results can be both uncanny and way off base.
You folks (esp.
Mcbain, from your time in Minnesota?) may already know about this site; but if not, you may enjoy checking it out. Its predictions of my taste have been reasonably close, though I’ve only rated two dozen films so far. We could (if you wish) add a Milkplus group onsite to show quick recommendations, but (given our happily disparate tastes) I don’t know how well that would work.
