A movie-movie is a movie that may not be a "great film" in the sense of
Schindler's List or
Wild Strawberries or
The 400 Blows or even
In the Bedroom, but which provides bang for the buck in the extreme in the areas of lush, trashy, guilty-pleasure type fun.
In any case,
Femme Fatale offers these commodities in abundance. The plot is, on the face of it, ridiculous and full of holes, but as it passes, you find yourself not caring one whit, caught up as you are in the joys of watching as a great director at the top of his form having a ball. The movie is divinely set and costumed and scored, magnificently edited, and paced swiftly when necessary and leisurely when that is called for. The opening sequence, a heist at the Cannes Film Festival, ranks with the very best of De Palma, as do many, many other sequences. And though it's basically a director's picture, the lead performances are sensational. Rebecca Romijn-Stamos is gorgeous and naughty and sexy in the title role, and Antonio Banderas, who I have not liked since his pre-American movie
Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, earns laughs and man's-man props in equal measure. The two of them have chemistry and they are equally delightful. In short, this is a terrific, terrific movie, high on my list of the best of the year.
BTW, you will no doubt see many bad reviews of this movie by critics who cannot see past the script. The script IMO is wonderful but illogical, and will annoy little minds who want everything spelled out. I say f**k 'em if they can't take a joke. Don't join them. See
Femme Fatale, and right away.
