White Oleander is a strange movie--artistically mediocre yet quite entertaining and possessed of a few excellent performances. The four actresses who share star billing are all worth watching: gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer as the murderous mother of heroine Allison Lohman; Lohman herself, an unknown with a wonderfully natural style; Robin Wright Penn, who is interesting raunchy and gritty as "trailer trash"; and the cream on the top, the awesome Renee Zellweger as a scarily vulnerable Hollywood actress. The movie is, as noted, rather entertaining, yet as slick and dishonest in its way as any movie with Sandra Dee or Troy Donahue. It brought back the thrill of "a night out at the movies," which is a blessing and a curse: the experience is fun on the surface but as insubstantial as buttered popcorn.
