Punch-Drunk Love is a great film with a great performance by Adam Sandler and a superb one by Emily Watson. That said, it will turn off a great many people IMO, as it already has several critics. It's genuinely weird; the Sandler character, who is posited as the lead in a romantic comedy, is arguably truly mentally ill in a very serious way. He's not just a neurotic loner in the Woody Allen style, but a real sicko. That we have true affection for him, that we believe in the love story between him and the mostly unneurotic Watson character, that we root for their happiness, are triumphs not only for Sandler and Watson, but also--and mostly--for the writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson, who has scored a four-peat after
Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, and
Magnolia. This Anderson kid has it--in spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs.
