For some reason, THE GOODBYE GIRL has slipped past me for all these years; despite the acclaim and awards and the almost always lovable Richard Dreyfuss in the lead, I'd never seen it until I checked out the DVD today. God DAMN that's a good movie! What the fuck? Dreyfuss is unbelievable. Mason is quite good too, though Simon forces her to be the set-up straight lady for Dreyfuss to deliver one zinger after another. Herbert Ross's direction is nothing outstanding (Woody Allen outdid him with ANNIE HALL and MANHATTAN) but it gets the job done by showing off Simon's brilliant script and Dreyfuss's show-stopping performance. No longer are JAWS, STAKEOUT, and LET IT RIDE my favorite RD movies. First-rate Cadillac; one of the best films of 1977, and maybe the best Hollywood romantic comedy of the decade.
