A Walk to Remember: C+
Woulda been a straight-up B, but it pounded me over the head with all this Christian Coalition mumbo-jumbo. I'm not against a film dealing with issues of faith just so long as it doesn't turn into some kind of propoganda film like this one.
Otherwise, it's your average teen love story. Popular guy. Dorky girl. They fall in love. Ho-hum except for the two leads. I'm in love with Mandy Moore so I'm a bit biased, but she's good. I won't say I was wowed by her talent, but I found her believable in the role. And she's just so darned cute. Shane West, he's good, too. Pulls off the transition between popular, stuck up guy to sensitive lover of the geek girl with style. I dug him.
SPOILER
Then, inexplicably, Ms. Moore gets leukemia and dies on us and it's all kinda corny, but I was expecting this little plot twist so I had myself braced. I was impressed that the film spared us the big, melodramatic scene with her dying in her lover's arms accompanied by a weepy string section. END SPOILER
Anyways, the flick isn't really anything special. Kinda made-for-TVish, but it's sweet nonetheless. I'm refusing to hold too much against it since I'm not really its intended audience. If you fall into the 12-16 age group, it'll probably be your favorite movie of the year.
