I was going to see Bourne
but Jen wanted Windtalkers
so the decision was made. Woo is still much more often miss than hit with me. I enjoy aspects of a few of his films and was very surprised by the quality of Face/Off
but everything else just screams of a guy showing off with his camera rather than telling a story. At one point during Windtalkers
the camera seemes to be rotating while revolving, weaving in and out of a group of people for close up shots of each actor's face. It is distracting, doesn't lend itself to drama, and seems show-offy. Ben Yahzee's story needed to be told, but this is an action movie and I found myself pretty bored throughout the endless machine gun fire.
Don't even get me started on Cage. He and Pacino should get together and compare notes. Still, Beach was very good and I will look for him in the future. Stormare is badly miscast. And Frances O'Conner is woefully underused. I would liked to have known more of the codetalkers, how the code worked, what training was like for them, etc. But these things aren't important when you have to parade more people into barrages of artillery. I concur with Tatara, the film is a missed opportunity. C+
