Saw
The Bourne Identity. It's probably a C+/B-. Decent enough action flick, elevated by a fucking fantastic Matt Damon performance. Who'd a thought he'd make a good action hero guy? He may not be the greatest actor in the world, but his charisma alone is enough to carry the film. Franka Potente, making the transfer from German to English-language films, is pretty magnificent, too.
There are plenty of problems with the film, mainly in the direction. Pedestrian is a good word to describe it. Seems like just another run-of-the-mill summer action flick, which wouldn't be a bad thing except that it's directed by Doug Liman whose previous two films just oozed style. Gone is the hyperkinetic, hyperstylized flashy cam which made
Go one of the best films of its year (despite its being paper-bag empty).
The Bourne Identity, anybody coulda made it. The plot, too, is a tad convoluted. I could've used another ten or so minutes tacked on just so the resolution would've been sufficiently explained. Felt a little too rushed.
