Just a quick note, saw Fred Schepisi's new film
Last Orders last night, which features the greatest British acting ensemble, well, since
Gosford Park, including three of my favorites, Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins, and Ray Winstone. Spanning 50 years in the life of it's characters (roughly 1939 to the late 1980s), the film paints a warm, realistic, and affectionate picture of the complex camaradie of a group of South London characters. The relatively complex multiple flashback narrative (which also includes flashbacks within flashbacks) is made to seem effortless, illustrating the films themes of mortality, memory, and friendship with a light, often funny hand. The movie worked best for me as a slow accrual of details and character, all of which was masterfully acted. There was a sense of ease and comfort among the actors, and while they all had there share of problems, they made me feel like I would want to hang out with them, having a pint down at the pub. Actually, they were a lot like my group of friends, minus the Cockney accents.
